At Stepney Park, we aim to provide an education that promotes academic excellence together with an enrichment offer that develops children’s character, prepares them for future success and gives them memories that will last a lifetime.

This means:

• We focus on fluency in basic skills. We want children to be able to use key skills and recall key knowledge effortlessly. For this reason, we ensure children practise key skills repeatedly and we track their progress closely.

• Language and vocabulary are central to our curriculum. Some of our children start school with a relatively narrow vocabulary. As a result, we have a particularly strong focus on developing language and vocabulary. This is why children are taught new vocabulary explicitly across our curriculum, why the quality of children’s language is a priority in lessons and why we have invested in high quality books across the curriculum.

• We want children to remember more. We have a very carefully sequenced curriculum; we have identified the key knowledge we want all children to learn and we use repeated practice and regular review to help them remember more. 

• We have high ambitions for all children. Whatever children’s starting points, we want them to enjoy a broad and demanding curriculum. As such, teachers carefully scaffold new learning where needed but this scaffolding is gradually withdrawn to support children’s developing independence.

• We prioritise an excellent enrichment offer. We provide a broad range of enrichment opportunities including arts and culture, with music a particular strength; sport, including tournaments against other schools; competitions like our annual talent show, spelling bee and poetry slam; chess as part of the curriculum for all and a rich programme of trips, including residentials.
