Inspired by Science

We have been thinking like scientists at Stepney Park
Forest and Meadow
Forest & Meadow classes have enjoyed exciting learning events this half term.
We worked together to make delicious pancakes! We used our core vocabulary boards to help us label the ingredients we need. We chose our own pancake toppings too! We all tasted our pancakes! Yum Yum!
On World Book Day, we chose our favourite stories. We enjoyed sharing these throughout the day.
When the school had a visit from some animals, we loved meeting amazing animals. We were very curious and keen to interact with them!
Year 6
In Year 6 this week we have been learning about electricity in our science lessons. We have made circuits using wires, batteries, bulbs, buzzers and switches. We worked in groups and each group decided on an enquiry question to investigate. Examples of these questions included:
-
What happens to the brightness of a bulb when more batteries are added to the circuit?
-
What happens to the volume of a buzzer when more buzzers are added to the circuit?
Each group had to plan out their own investigation and then carry out, showing good teamwork and organisation. The results were then recorded and any conclusions that we could draw from our findings were described.
We will be doing more investigations next week as we develop our understanding of electrical circuits.
Year 5
Buzzing with cosmic energy, for weeks, In Year 5, we have been learning all about space. How the moon orbits the Earth and how all the planets, especially Earth, orbit as well as rotate around the sun.
Year 5 have been immersed in the mysteries of space, diligently charting the Earth’s orbit and rotation. Armed with tape measures, they ventured outside at regular intervals, measuring the lengthening and shrinking shadows cast by their own bodies, recording the height in centimetres of their shadow throughout the day.
Learning about space is important because it helps us understand our place in the universe. It encourages us to ask questions about how things work, make observations over time like famous scientists (Caroline Herschel, Zhange Heng and Galileo) and use our knowledge to aim to be young people in STEM.
Nursery
With the arrival of some warmer weather, Nursery have been enjoying learning about the new spring season. We have experienced the changes over in our Woodlands area, talking about the sunshine, flowers that are growing and differences we can see.
We have shown interest and curiosity like Corey the Chimpanzee and confidently explored our woodlands environment. We spent some time collecting different natural objects which we took back to class. We used all our interesting objects for even more learning, including sorting, pattern making and making art work by adding leaves, sticks and flowers to playdough.
