Class News 7.3.25

Spring news from Stepney
Year 6
In Science, Year 6 have been building on their earlier learning about classification. We looked at why some people think dolphins are fish and that bats are birds when they are both really mammals. Afterwards, we wrote an explanation to clarify why they were in their respective groups.
Look at these two great examples from Arif and Sara.
In History, Year 6 have been learning about the history of the British Empire and its legacy. We had a very interesting discussion about whether the statue of Robert Milligan should have been removed from outside the museum of Docklands. Read Mariam’s thoughts here.
In Science, we built on our previous knowledge of light and learnt about Hasan Ibm Al-haytham who is recognised as one of the greatest scientists of his era; he is the person that discovered how we see. Read Kausar’s informative biography here.
Year 1
In English we have been reading “Pretty Salma”.
We were curious like Corey and have enjoyed comparing the story to Little Red Riding Hood, looking at the similarities and differences in the story. We retold the story ourselves, using time connectives (first, next, then) and past tense verbs (told, sung, gave). We were ambitious like Abby with our writing, making sure we thought the sentence, said the sentence and wrote it.
In Science we have been learning about different types of plants and identifying them. We were Ruby responsible when we went to the woodlands to look at all the different plants we have there.
We have also looked at the different parts of a plant and understand that all plants have leaves, stems and roots but they can look different.
Year 5
In Year 5 Maple, we have been learning about fractions and decimals. We recently learned about thousandths and used this new knowledge to find equivalent amounts and compare fractions and decimals. We acted curiously by linking this new learning to prior knowledge, showed collaboration by working with our learning partners and were ambitious by ensuring that we repeatedly practised these new skills in our books. We also looked at answering reasoning questions, which meant we were explaining the method of our working out. Have a look at our fabulous work below!
Year 4
We LOVE reading in 4 Maple!
In our English lessons, we have been enjoying reading the book 'The Proudest Blue' by Ibtihaj Muhammad. Did you know that this author won a bronze medal in the Olympics for fencing? The story covers themes of family love, overcoming bullying and being proud of who you are.
We have been writing different types of sentences inspired by this story. We are currently working on using a range of adverbials.
We have also been very ambitious with our recent chess games. Year 4 have been learning how to 'castle' and 'check' in chess.
Year 3
This week, 3 Maple have been trying something new by being actors for our History play about the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age! We have worked really hard to learn our lines from the script, collaborate with each other in small groups and perform confidently in front of an audience.
Did you know that people in the Stone Age needed to hunt animals to survive? Or that the Romans sometimes decided not to fight because of rainy weather? One fascinating thing we discovered was how making human sacrifices was a common practice in the Stone Age!
In our history unit, we have also learnt about how combining copper and tin can make a new metal, bronze, which is why it was called The Bronze Age. When iron was discovered, people then used that to make stronger tools and weapons, which was called The Iron Age.
Take a look at these pictures from our rehearsal!
We found out about ancient human sacrifice! How horrible!
The Roman Army marching towards their war location.
Finally, we have had such a wonderful time enjoying World Book Day in 3 Maple! Take a look at all of our fabulous costumes (many of them were cleverly handmade!)
Year 2
This term, 2 Maple have thoroughly enjoyed exploring The Real Story of the Three Little Pigs, discovering a whole new perspective on the classic tale! As they come to the end of their English unit, the children are busy writing persuasive letters to the judge, passionately arguing that the newspapers have unfairly framed us—the misunderstood wolf. It has been wonderful to see their curiosity shine through as they eagerly incorporate newly learnt vocabulary into their writing, carefully selecting words to strengthen their arguments. Well done, 2 Maple, for your enthusiasm and creativity!
Idris
Hanan
In Year 2 we very much got into the spirit of World Book Day by dressing up as our favorite book characters! We also really enjoyed some of the older children coming to our class and reading stories to us in our Super Squads.
Reception
We have been reading The Gingerbread Man in Literacy this week. We were very excited to make our own gingerbread man. We discussed all the ingredients we would need and wrote a method. We used a scale to help us measure the ingredients before we mixed them to make the dough. We thought about how the dough smelt and felt in our hands. The children showed good strength when kneading the dough using their knuckles. We decorated our gingerbread man with chocolates and raisins.
