London Chess Classic

The London Chess Classic is an annual 10 day tournament for some of the best players in the world.

We were very lucky to be invited to take part in the 2023 London Chess Classic schools' event along with 130 other children from schools across London.

First, we received a chess lesson from a Chess in Schools tutor. After this, we played against one of the Grandmasters who is participating in the tournament. Each Grandmaster played against 15 children at the same time. We played against Mateusz Bartel who is ranked 74th in the world. He managed to checkmate all of us very quickly!  Finally, we had a tournament against all the other schools.  All our children did brilliantly and we were very proud of their sportsmanship.  Congratulations to Ayan in Year 5 who won a gold medal as the winner of Stepney Park team and a bronze medal in the main tournament - a huge achievement.  Well done Ayan.
