Dear parents and carers of Stepney Park,

Afterschool childcare. Thank you to those parents who replied to the questionnaire regarding the possibility of afterschool childcare. Though I can’t yet make any guarantees, there was a strong enough response to continue exploring the logistics. I will of course update you in due course. 

Homework. At Stepney Park, there are two expectations of children with regard to homework. Both are short but daily as little and often is the best approach to support learning in these areas. These are:

  • Daily reading. All children should now have reading books from school and then should spend twenty minutes reading a day. It’s always best for this to be with an adult if at all possible, no matter the age of children. Reading with someone else boosts motivation while also allowing someone to check reading accuracy.

  • Maths. Children do better at maths when certain facts are memorised. This includes number bonds up to ten in key stage 1 (e.g. 3+5=8, 4+2=6) and times tables in key stage 2. The aim here really is to memorise these so that children can recall them effortlessly. We subscribe to websites to support this (Numbots in key stage 1, Times Tables Rockstars in key stage 2) but anything that helps children to memorise these facts will likely be useful.

Stars of Stepney Park

In Year 5, children have been incredibly busy with their learning this term! In English lessons, they have been reading the gripping book The Savage. This thrilling story has inspired some great comprehension skills and got them all thinking curiously. They have also been active outdoors during their energetic PE sessions. They are enjoying being outside as they develop their skills in hockey. Finally, in history, they are learning all about Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlements. They have loved exploring artefacts to discover how people lived, worked and built their communities in Britain long ago.

       

Notices

  • Parents’ Coffee Morning - Monday 21st September at 9.10am. This is the first of our weekly coffee mornings for parents. Join Shipa to find out what is on offer.

  • After school clubs. These start on Tuesday 22nd September. Please ensure you have paid in advance if your child is attending a club.

  • Term Dates. The school will next be closed for half term from Wednesday 21st October to Friday 30th October. Term dates for the rest of this academic year are available on the school website here.
