Headteacher's News

Friday 6th February 2026

Dear parents and carers of Stepney Park,

Ramadan. As the beginning of Ramadan approaches, we have collaborated with community partners to provide guidance and support for pupils who plan to fast. We understand that fasting becomes obligatory upon reaching puberty, according to Islamic law, and we are ready to support pupils in Years 5 and 6 who choose to fast. For younger children, we kindly request that parents refrain from allowing them to fast on school days, prioritising their health and safety. We encourage open conversations at home about the importance of sensitivity when discussing fasting at school, ensuring a supportive environment for all.

If you would like your child in Year 5 or 6 to fast, please inform us in writing, preferably before the start of Ramadan. Teachers and the school office have a slip to make this easier. This will allow us to monitor their well-being and provide timely support. We will contact you if your child shows signs of illness and will sensitively assist them in breaking their fast if needed. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

All the best for the week ahead, and I wish you a peaceful Ramadan when it comes.

Richard.

Headteacher, Stepney Park Primary School.

Baking Bread in Y5. This week Y5 have been working hard in the cookery room and baking an assortment of delicious bread! Before they started their work with the ovens, they needed to first plan out how they wanted their breads to look and taste. To do this, they looked at various bread types and their recipes in class, which included both savoury and sweet plaited bread.

Handwriting progress. Recently, I’ve been struck by the enormous progress some children have made in their handwriting. The pictures below show the incredible progress that Yusuf in year 3 has made in his handwriting:

In a digital age, research has shown that handwriting still matters. First, fluent handwriting allows children to concentrate on other aspects of writing, which improves their quality of writing overall. Second, increasing amounts of evidence is emerging of a link between handwriting and remembering learning over time, especially among young children.

If you wish to support your child’s handwriting at home, simply showing that you value it can be hugely beneficial. However, please also feel free to discuss specific strategies with your child’s teacher.
